Colombia raises Ecuador tariffs to 100% as trade tensions escalate
Colombia said the retaliatory move was forced after Ecuador doubled duties and cited a $1.02 billion trade surplus last year.
On Friday, Colombian Trade Minister Diana Morales announced Colombia will raise tariffs on Ecuadorian imports to 100%, matching Ecuador's decision to increase its own customs duties from 50% to 100% on Thursday.
Ecuador has hiked tariffs in recent months, citing a trade deficit and accusing Colombia of failing to combat drug trafficking; Bogota denies these allegations while citing its active military operations.
Beyond the tariff dispute, Colombia has halted energy sales to Ecuador, a critical resource during droughts, while Ecuador relies on its neighbor for significant quantities of medicines and pesticides.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa slammed Colombian President Gustavo Petro for calling jailed former Vice President Jorge Glas a "political prisoner," labeling the remark an "assault on our sovereignty."
Tensions previously escalated last month when 14 people died in explosions during an Ecuadorian security operation near the border, complicating the relationship between nations that shared a $1.02 billion Colombian trade surplus in 2025.
Colombia and Ecuador have strained their diplomatic relations to the maximum. Both governments have called for consultations with their respective ambassadors and have announced tariffs of up to 100%, which means in practice a deadly blow to bilateral trade.
