EC directs political parties to get advertisements pre-certified
The Election Commission mandates pre-certification of all political ads and disclosure of social media accounts to enhance transparency and curb misinformation, applying to five poll-bound states.
- On Friday, the Election Commission directed political parties to secure pre-certification for all advertisements from Media Certification and Monitoring Committees ahead of upcoming Assembly polls in four States and one Union Territory.
- Scheduled between April 9 and April 29, Assembly polls in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry prompted the Commission to establish certification requirements for campaign content.
- Individual candidates must apply for advertisement certification to District MCMCs, while registered political parties approach State-level MCMCs; candidates must disclose all authentic social media accounts in their affidavits when filing nominations.
- Political parties must submit a detailed statement of expenditure incurred on internet and social media campaigning to the Commission within 75 days of the election's completion, per the Representation of the People Act.
- On March 19, the Commission held a meeting with Chief Electoral Officers and social media platform representatives to ensure timely action against reported instances of misinformation and fake news; MCMCs will maintain strict vigilance on suspected paid news.
