Dystany Spurlock’s Road From 18-Wheelers to NASCAR as First Black Woman Driver
Spurlock, 34, will become the first Black woman in NASCAR’s top three touring series after a strong ARCA start this season.
- On Friday, May 8, at Watkins Glen, Dystany Spurlock will become the first Black woman to race in a NASCAR top-three touring competition, piloting the No. Foxxtecca Toyota for MBM Motorsports and Garage 66 in the Craftsman Truck Series.
- The 34-year Virginia native previously spent nine years driving tractor-trailers and began drag racing motorcycles at age 16; she left her commercial driving career behind after Foxxtecca recruited her for stockcar racing.
- Spurlock impressed observers on April 18 by executing a difficult save after contact with Gio Ruggiero, and she has finished in the top 12 in each of her three previous ARCA Menards Series General Tire entries.
- Aiming for the Cup Series within three years, Spurlock plans to pull double duty at the Glen, competing in the ARCA Menards Series General Tire 100 alongside her Truck Series debut.
- Utilizing simulation rigs, Spurlock is adapting to the road course; she noted the experience is similar to Formula 4, though she is adjusting from paddle shifting to manual shifting during competition.
