Chemical pollution worsens at Dutch swim sites; Dog flea collar pesticide often found
Together with blue-green algae and bacteria, many Dutch water bodies increasingly contain an amount of chemical substances over the allowed levels. According to Natuur & Milieu and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, people in the Netherlands are not sufficiently warned about those before going for a swim. One of the substances that was found particularly often, for example, is imidacloprid, usually used against fleas on dog collars.

Dutch lakes and swimming ponds nowhere fully meet chemical standards, Natuur & Milieu and the Netherlands Institute for Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) state in a study. They examined data on the water quality of 205 official and 57 unofficial swimming locations. "The number of swimming waters that meet all chemical quality requirements has dropped to zero," they conclude.
