Researchers said the House of Orange-Nassau was deeply involved in colonial exploitation and helped sustain slavery, after a three-year study of royal archives.
- On Friday, an in-depth historical study commissioned by King Willem-Alexander revealed the House of Orange was "wholehearted" in colonial exploitation, sharing responsibility for sustaining slavery over centuries.
- Researchers concluded after a three-year study involving 60 historians that the royal house supported slavery without reservations from 1600 to the present, with most rulers showing no objections.
- The family earned an estimated 576 million from slavery, mostly in the former Dutch East Indies, though research showed they earned "almost nothing" directly from the slave trade itself.
- King Willem-Alexander described the findings as "heartbreaking and confronting" during a speech at the Academy Building in Leiden on Friday, pledging to contribute positively to the future.
- The National Institute for the Dutch Slavery Past and Heritage praised the king's transparency but urged the findings lead to "awareness, dialogue, corrections and additions" in national history and reparatory justice.
