Dutch 'reformed hacker' arrested in ShinyHunters investigation, police and boss say
The arrest follows claims that ShinyHunters stole data from more than 5,000 FBI employees and applicants, officials said.
- On Monday, Dutch police arrested Pepijn van der Stap, offensive security lead at Neo Security, as part of an investigation into hacker group ShinyHunters.
- Van der Stap gained international media attention following 2023 convictions for data theft and extortion, then publicly renounced cybercrime and transitioned to legitimate security work.
- Neo Security CEO Benjamin Korper, who vetted Van der Stap before hiring, said, "Absolutely everybody I talked to is flabbergasted." Investigators found no evidence Van der Stap hacked the company.
- The 24-year-old suspect will appear in Rotterdam court on Tuesday following a police raid on Neo Security's office on September 15, when Dutch forensic investigators visited.
- Independent journalist Brian Krebs first reported the arrest, which centers on ShinyHunters, a group notorious for large-scale data thefts including recent breaches of FBI employee records.
