The reading skills of 15-year-old Dutch students have once again declined sharply. This is evident from the latest OECD PISA study, published on Tuesday. The gap compared to the international average has never been this wide: nearly forty percent of Dutch students no longer reach the required basic level. This increases the risk that they will leave school with low literacy skills.
The sharp decline in reading skills among Dutch schoolchildren comes as no surprise to publishers, booksellers, and reading organizations. Tamar van Gelder, Managing Director of Stichting Lezen and Chair of the Leescoalitie, calls the problem a "multi-headed monster".
