Beijing bans drone possession in the city after earlier moves to tighten rules
Authorities will confiscate noncompliant drones and fine individuals and companies as Beijing offers subsidies for owners to sell, scrap, recycle or ship devices out.
- Beijing authorities announced on Sunday a ban on drone possession within city limits effective mid-November, tightening regulations that already include a May ban on sales of the devices.
- A fatal accident in late June when a small aircraft crashed into a Beijing skyscraper prompted the stringent security measures, killing the pilot and injuring 13.
- Under regulations approved in March and effective May 1, existing drone owners had to register devices with real names. Now they must dispose of drones through recycling, buyback sales, or shipping them outside Beijing.
- Beijing Daily reports authorities will offer subsidies for existing drone owners to sell devices at designated buyback locations. Authorities can also confiscate drones and impose fines on those who do not comply.
- China often maintains more stringent security rules than other regions. Drone users can still fly outdoors elsewhere in the country, though real-name registrations remain mandatory for all operators.
