Drivers urged to clear wheels after snow to avoid jarring wheel shaking
AAA Northeast advises removing snow and ice from wheel rims to prevent vehicle shaking caused by unbalanced wheels during cold, persistent winter conditions.
- After reports of trembling vehicles, AAA advised drivers in areas hit by recent winter storms to use a brush or car wash spray to remove snow from wheels.
- Because temperatures have stayed very cold, snow and ice inside wheel rims can unbalance wheels and cause shaking, Schieldrop from AAA Northeast said.
- After feeling the tremor, Duffaut, a driver from Cumberland, Rhode Island, said, `I started to notice my car like bouncing, and I said, 'Oh Lord Jesus, what's happening?'`
- Drivers may notice the shaking differently by speed, sometimes more at higher speeds depending on snow packed in wheels, and Schieldrop simulated highway shaking to show handling effects.
- Oftentimes it warms up, and the packed snow melts away so you don't experience it, while many drivers checking online learned this week that snow in wheels caused the shaking.
