Driver who failed to stop at scene of fatal e-scooter crash spared jail
Police found no fault in her driving after the crash, and the court imposed a suspended sentence, 80 hours of unpaid work and a three-year driving ban.
On Wednesday, Deimante Ziobryte was sentenced at Basildon Magistrates Court for failing to stop after a February 2025 collision that killed siblings Roman Casselden, 16, and nine-year-old Darcie in Pitsea.
Essex Police concluded Ziobryte was not at fault for the collision itself, yet she fled the scene and made phone calls "up to 20 minutes" to family instead of contacting emergency services.
Victim impact statements revealed parents Alec Casselden and Emma Keeling suffered PTSD and sleepless nights, while defense lawyer Hulusi Ali argued Ziobryte's actions reflected "a panic-driven failure" rather than indifference.
The court imposed a three-month suspended prison sentence, 80 hours of unpaid work, 20 days of rehabilitation, and a three-year driving disqualification on Ziobryte.
Deputy District Judge Jennifer Twite emphasized the sentencing addressed only the failure to stop, stating: "Despite the tragedy that occurred, I am sentencing you for failing to stop at the accident, not for anything further.
