DoorDash goes all-in on its own drone delivery ecosystem

DoorDash says about 80% of restaurant orders are light enough for air delivery as it builds its own drone system around existing operations.

  • On Wednesday, DoorDash unveiled DoorDash Air at its annual Dash Forward 2026 event, launching an autonomous drone delivery pilot program in Northern California with a six-propeller aircraft.
  • Leveraging 13 years of order data, the company developed its own aircraft and Autonomous Delivery Platform to control the entire delivery stack rather than relying solely on third-party drone operators.
  • The aircraft uses a winch to lower packages to driveways or backyards without landing, and initial testing shows delivery times of less than five minutes on average from restaurant to customer door.
  • Early pilot participants include national brands Chipotle and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, alongside small business Momo N Curry, all able to integrate drone delivery without altering their existing restaurant operations.
  • System software will determine the most efficient delivery method for each order, orchestrating drones alongside human Dashers and other autonomous robots to match orders with the best delivery option.
