The governor of New York warned that scammers are now sending text messages and emails in a bid to “spread false information” about checks being sent out to more than 8 million households. New York State began mailing "inflation refund" checks to eligible residents on September 26. However, Governor Hochu warned that fraudsters are using text messages, emails, voice messages, and phone calls to impersonate the tax agency, claiming that bank or personal information must be submitted to receive the money. She stressed that these are false information and residents should not be deceived.
