Air Force Wants Jet Given by Qatar to Serve as Air Force One Ready by July 4th
The jet has completed modification and flight testing and is now being painted, the Air Force said.
The Air Force is targeting a July 4 delivery for a Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar to join the Air Force One fleet in time for the nation's 250th anniversary, officials said.
Qatar's luxury jet was accepted by the White House in 2025, prompting the Air Force to rapidly upgrade the aircraft to presidential standards; L3Harris is managing security and communications overhauls.
President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the 13-year-old, $400 million aircraft, saying it would be "stupid" to refuse the offer. Officials are exploring a June 14 delivery coinciding with Trump's 80th birthday.
Democrats and government advocates have criticized the gift, warning that accepting the luxury aircraft creates a conflict of interest that could influence presidential decisions.
Meanwhile, the official Air Force One replacement program remains four years behind schedule with costs ballooning to over $5 billion, leaving delivery not expected until mid-2028 before Trump's term ends.
