DOLE Fines Tab Baldwin P9.8M, Ateneo P4.9M over Work Permits
DOLE said Baldwin lacked required permits for foreign nationals, while Ateneo was fined for employing him without the documents.
- On Tuesday, August 11, the Department of Labor and Employment fined former Ateneo de Manila University head coach Thomas Anthony "Tab" Baldwin P9.8 million and the university P4.9 million for failing to secure required work permits for foreign nationals.
- Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino ruled that Baldwin and ADMU committed separate violations by failing to obtain necessary Alien Employment Permits and Certificates of Exemption, resulting in 490 days of non-compliance between February 2025 and June 2026.
- Citing the "gravity of the violation," regulators imposed the maximum administrative penalty following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili during training activities supervised by the 68-year-old coach.
- Separately, DOLE referred Baldwin to the Bureau of Immigration for potential deportation proceedings, while the UAAP has "perpetually banned" the former coach from collegiate sports.
- ADMU officials stated they are reviewing the order with legal counsel, as Labor Secretary Tolentino emphasized that the investigation should drive changes to mechanisms protecting Filipino workers.
