Dog who bolted from owner’s car and swept out to sea rescued

On February 1, 2025, Porthcawl RNLI rescued Golden Retriever Seren after she bolted into the sea near Porthcawl beach in Wales. The Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires located the exhausted dog around 300 m from Newton Point.
Owner Andrea Phillips said the car trunk noise spooked Seren, causing her to leap out immediately and run across dunes onto the beach. Seren had been adopted from Many Tears Animal Rescue just five weeks earlier.
After receiving the 999 call, Porthcawl RNLI Helm Chris Missen and crew instantly located Seren, where she was being swept further out to sea by the tidal current. A member of the RNLI said, "Miraculously, we have just come across a Golden Retriever in the water."
Reunited with Seren, Andrea said the rescue was "like something out of a movie seeing the crew member in their gear carrying Seren from the lifeboat through the shallows." Porthcawl RNLI Helm Chris Missen confirmed Seren was "a little shaken but otherwise unharmed."
Following the rescue, the RNLI issued safety guidance advising owners to keep dogs on leashes near cliff edges or fast-flowing water and to dial 999 or 112 for the Coastguard if a pet gets into difficulty. Chris Missen called it "a heart-warming ending for our first rescue of the year.
