Doctor Who: Mark Gatiss Feeling "Very Doomy" About Tender Process
Ex-Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss warned the series faces a long hiatus following the BBC's decision to put the show out to competitive tender, suggesting the production process could stall indefinitely.
Plans for a 2026 Christmas Special were abandoned earlier this year, with showrunner Russell Davies and producer Bad Wolf departing as the BBC placed the show out to tender.
Gatiss noted the BBC previously promised to continue Doctor Who in 1989 before quietly shelving it until the 2005 revival, warning history may be repeating itself.
Despite his "doomy" verdict, Gatiss believes a "proper break" is "a perfectly great idea" to allow fans to miss the series and enable new leadership to bring fresh ideas.
The BBC previously employed this tender process for Casualty last year, retaining rights while finding a new producer, though Doctor Who faces a different path following its successful 21 years.
Doctor Who is facing an uncertain future. Long-term author Mark Gatiss even thinks a longer break is possible and that could do the show good from our point of view.
