Man in ICU After Carjacking at Oregon Airport: 'It Happened so Fast'
The victim suffered five broken ribs and a concussion after the suspect allegedly drove recklessly and fled before police tracked him down.
On Monday, May 4, a 52-year-old Vidal Pedraza stole a Nissan Rogue at Portland International Airport while a passenger loaded luggage, dragging the man from the vehicle; Port of Portland Police arrested Pedraza near 8975 Northeast Airport Way.
Court documents reveal Pedraza was in legal trouble last week for smashing vehicles with a rock near Southwest Columbia Street; he failed to appear for his arraignment on Friday, May 1.
The victim, Mark, remains in the ICU with five broken ribs and a concussion, while Pedraza told police he had been awake for five days and stole the car to return to Los Angeles.
Prosecutors charged Pedraza with nearly 20 counts, including felony assault and robbery charges, and he is being held on $100,000 bail pending trial.
Helena Wolfe, who was loading the vehicle, said "Cremains are irreplaceable and family heirlooms are irreplaceable," reflecting on items lost and raising concerns about future airport safety protocols.
