Do more for Iran activists and Canada diaspora threatened by regime, groups urge
Iranian-Canadian advocates say Canada should expand sanctions and create a program to help injured protesters and dissidents facing threats.
On Wednesday, Iranian-Canadian groups and Ardeshir Zarezadeh, president of the International Centre for Human Rights, urged Ottawa on Parliament Hill to protect democracy activists and counter transnational repression targeting dissidents.
Zarezadeh reported receiving frequent threats from the Islamic Republic, including an email two days prior, while UN reports indicate anti-regime protests in Iran have resulted in at least 5,000 deaths, potentially reaching 20,000.
Conservative MP James Bezan is sponsoring legislation that would legally define transnational repression and expand travel bans to include relatives of foreign officials, aiming to hold Tehran accountable.
While Ottawa says it combats Iranian influence through sanctions and working with allies, Zarezadeh argued the government has offered no practical humanitarian programs since the January mass-atrocity crimes.
Canada severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012, and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated shortly before the war that Ottawa would not restore relations until "regime change" occurs.
