Wreckage of a US Coast Guard ship lost during WWI has been found off the coast of England
The find ends a three-year search and will guide further underwater research, Coast Guard officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Coast Guard announced the British Gasperados Dive Team located the wreck of the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa last weekend at 300 feet deep, approximately 50 miles off the coast of Cornwall, England.
- During World War I on September 26, 1918, a German submarine UB-41 fired a torpedo at the ship, causing it to sink in three minutes with all 131 crew members aboard, the largest naval loss for United States forces during the war.
- Aboard were 111 Coast Guardsmen, four Navy sailors, and 16 Britons and the Coast Guard provided historical records including deck fittings and ship's bell to confirm the wreck's identity.
- Coast Guard commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday stated the discovery connects the service to the crew's sacrifice, noting that "devotion to duty endures," while dive team leader Steve Mortimer confirmed their final resting place is now known.
- The Coast Guard is developing plans to explore the wreck further using autonomous systems and robotics, following the dive team's three-year search that required ten target dives to locate the vessel.
