DFL lawmakers planning to bring back Flock camera legislation
The bill would cut camera data retention to 48 hours and limit access by federal agencies, private entities and other states.
On Friday, Sen. Clare Oumou Verbeten, DFL-St. Paul, and Rep. Brad Tabke, DFL-Shakopee, announced they will refile legislation to regulate license plate readers made by Flock and Axon.
Tabke introduced the bill after Shakopee residents reported instances of ICE agents using cameras to harass them, prompting concerns over federal data access and privacy.
Legislation SF 4739 and HF 4205 mandates that cameras post warning signs and destroy collected data after 48 hours, replacing the current 60-day retention period.
Proposed restrictions also bar out-of-state entities and federal agencies from accessing data without a court order, amid vandalism in cities like Duluth and St. Cloud.
Previous efforts failed in a House committee along party lines, but Oumou Verbeten and Tabke intend to push the bill again in 2027 if re-elected.
