Dexter Lawrence looking to keep same offseason approach before reporting to Bengals' training camp
Lawrence is leading by example as Cincinnati adds veterans and tries to lift a defense that ranked 31st in yards allowed last season.
Dexter Lawrence is preparing for his first season with the Cincinnati Bengals, utilizing the five-week break before training camp to train intensively. "You've got to put your head down and train," Lawrence said on Wednesday at the end of offseason workouts.
The Bengals acquired the three-time Pro Bowl selection from the New York Giants on April 19 for the 10th overall pick, aiming to revitalize a defense that ranked 31st in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed last season.
Lawrence faced the fifth-highest double-team rate among defensive tackles last season at over 70 percent, contributing to minimal sack production. The Bengals added Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, and Bryan Cook to help him avoid such defensive schemes.
Coach Zac Taylor praised Lawrence's leadership by example since his arrival, while teammate Boye Mafe called him "a calming presence" that makes everyone's job easier around the defense.
With a "big chip on his shoulder," Lawrence aims to revive a Cincinnati pass rush that was tied for 35 sacks in 2025. "I know how I approach this game and my impact to the game," he said, despite sack production not always reflecting it.
