Dewitt family giving back to Sicamous heroes following devastating barn fire
The family set up a dedicated donation account to support responding fire departments after the blaze destroyed their barn and calves, officials said.
- On Sept. 24, a devastating fire destroyed the barn and calves at D Dutchmen Dairy, which Bianca Colonna described as "a farmer's worst nightmare."
- Sicamous Fire Rescue, aided by Malakwa and Swansea Point, quickly extinguished the blaze, with the Dewitts crediting the departments as "absolutely amazing" for keeping their farm operational.
- Expressing gratitude, the Dewitts established a relief fund to support the responding fire departments after Colonna noted the family received numerous requests about where to direct monetary contributions.
- Donations are being managed through SASCU Credit Union via e-transfer or cash at the dairy, with the Dewitts ensuring all funds are accounted for and disbursed appropriately.
- In a Sept. 27 update, Colonna announced the birth of a calf named Jenny, with the family accepting 'J' name suggestions from the community on Facebook.
