Despite heavy snow, Wisconsin gun deer season totals remain largely consistent

  • On Dec. 2, 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported hunters registered 182,084 deer during the 2025 nine-day gun deer season, a slight decline in both harvest and participation.
  • The 2025 Wisconsin gun deer season ran Nov. 22-30, with management-unit changes limiting direct comparisons, and Pritzl said, `Considering our harvest numbers are relatively similar, given the fact that we removed probably the most productive part of the Northern Forest zone into the Central Farmland zone, it speaks well that the Northern Forest, as a zone, maintained a stable harvest this year.`
  • Specifically, DNR figures show hunters registered 86,068 antlered deer, a 2.6% drop this year, while Jeff Pritzl said the 96,016 antlerless harvest rose about 1% from last year.
  • Two shooting incidents included one fatality involving Michael Kottke, 24, of Lomira, on Nov. 22 in Fond du Lac County; the DNR said the case remains under investigation.
  • License and long-term herd context shows 294,757 total registrations, 1.1% ahead last year, and 790,044 licenses sold with 550,611 for gun privileges only.
