Democratic US senator asks Capital One for details on Trump account anti-money laundering review
Hassan wants Capital One to explain the activity, policies and findings behind its anti-money-laundering review that led to account closures.
On Tuesday, Senator Maggie Hassan pressed Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank for details about an internal anti-money laundering review that led the bank to close accounts linked to President Donald Trump and his businesses last month.
The Trump Organization and Eric Trump sued Capital One in March 2025, alleging the 2021 closures of hundreds of affiliated accounts were politically motivated; the bank denied acting on political grounds, citing a careful AML team review.
Conservative officials have amplified claims that large financial institutions use "woke" policies to target conservative-leaning individuals and businesses. The industry argues lenders are simply following federal regulations when closing accounts.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in August 2025 to curb discriminatory debanking practices and sued JPMorgan Chase in January on similar grounds. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is probing the issue across multiple institutions.
In her letter to Fairbank, Hassan requested documents describing specific transactions and communications with law enforcement to support congressional oversight. Capital One declined to comment; White House and Trump Organization spokespeople did not immediately respond.
DEMOCRATIC Sen. Maggie Hassan is asking Capital One for details on the background check that led to the closure of Donald Trump's account. Trump claims that the decision is politically motivated.
