Delhi High Court to Appoint Amicus for Arvind Kejriwal, Others in Excise Case
The court said the lawyers will assist after the AAP leaders boycotted proceedings over bias concerns.
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court announced it will appoint senior lawyers as amici curiae to represent AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Durgesh Pathak in the Central Bureau of Investigation liquor policy case.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ordered the appointment after Kejriwal, Sisodia, and Pathak decided last week to boycott proceedings, citing concerns about her 'perceived ideological proximity' to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Previously, Justice Sharma rejected the leaders' recusal petition, stating, 'If I were to accept these applications, it would set a troubling precedent,' after petitioners highlighted her 'public association' with a lawyers' group linked to the RSS.
The court emphasized it must stand for the institution, noting amici curiae will be appointed on Friday to assist in hearing the CBI's arguments despite the leaders' absence.
This development follows a February 27 trial court order that discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia, Pathak, and 21 others, which the CBI is now challenging in the High Court.
