Delhi Court Grants Bail to 17 Protesters, Seeks Report on Allegations of 'Custodial Torture' by Two
The judge said the 17 are young and mostly students, and ordered Delhi Police to file a report on torture claims from two detainees.
On Monday, duty judicial magistrate Animesh Kumar granted bail to 17 protesters arrested for unlawful assembly, while simultaneously ordering Delhi Police to submit a report on allegations of "custodial torture."
Protesters were demonstrating against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanding an FIR against Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, whom a journalist accused of groping her during a previous protest.
The court ordered Delhi Police to submit a report on "custodial torture" claims, noting injuries on Samarth Singh, Sheikh Yunus, and Dharmender, while setting bail at ₹15,000 per accused.
Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected 14 times in 10 months to poll panel decisions, with Sandhu claiming some actions were "unauthorised and illegal."
The Opposition continues demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, while the Election Commission maintains that administrative queries are standard practice to safeguard voter rights.
