Democrat Missy Hughes Suspends Campaign for Governor, Endorses Lt. Gov Sara Rodriguez
Hughes said Sara Rodriguez is best positioned to win in November as six candidates remain in the Democratic primary.
On Monday, Missy Hughes suspended her campaign for Wisconsin governor and endorsed Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, narrowing the Democratic primary field ahead of the August 11 election.
Hughes, the Democratic field's most moderate candidate, withdrew days after placing last in a straw poll at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin state convention in Madison.
Rodriguez led the poll with 27%, followed by state Representative Francesca Hong at 23% and state Senator Kelda Roys at 19%, with six Democratic candidates remaining in the primary race.
Kelda Roys' campaign dismissed the endorsement, stating it "has no impact on the state of the race," even as Hughes urged other candidates to consolidate around Rodriguez.
Voters will decide the Democratic nominee at the August 11 primary, with Democrats aiming to maintain control of the governor's office in the November general election.
