Forty years ago, the deadliest season on the world's second-highest mountain, K2, began. A total of 13 climbers died there during the summer, including four who were attempting to climb the first unclimbed route, called the Magic Line, and three women. The series of tragedies began on June 21, 1986, with a giant avalanche.
