UFU Highlights Safety of Locally Produced Eggs in Light of UK-Wide Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreak
Public health officials say 207 cases have been confirmed, and vulnerable groups are being told to avoid runny eggs unless they carry approved safety marks.
The UK Health Security Agency declared a national Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak involving more than 200 confirmed cases and one death. Officials say the illness "may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK."
Epidemiologists found eggs provided the "strongest signal" as the source after interviewing 114 affected people. With 38% of those ill admitted to hospital, cases span from infants to people as old as 90.
Investigations by the Food Standards Agency identify imported eggs used in catering as the suspected source. Deputy UFU President Clement Lynch added that high UK standards for food production "must apply to imported food."
Consumers are advised to consume only raw or runny eggs bearing the British Lion mark, as authorities emphasize there is no evidence linking UK-produced eggs to the outbreak.
Experts suggest the confirmed figure "is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg" due to unreported cases. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland continues monitoring, noting no linked cases or contaminated egg distribution in Ireland.
