DEA Launches New Anti-Fentanyl Initiative
The DEA's campaign targets traffickers and demand amid a decline in overdose deaths from over 100,000 in 2023 to more than 50,000 in 2024, officials said.

- CDC data show the death toll is down from a peak of over 100,000 fatal overdoses, with more than 50,000 confirmed fatal overdoses highlighting the public-health toll.
- The DEA says Operation Fentanyl Free America seized more than 9,300 pounds of fentanyl, and Brian Leardo said `The deadly dose within the total number of pills seized has gone down to about 30& from 70%`.
- Top regional DEA agent said Wednesday in Billings that targeted enforcement and harsher federal sentences are sending a strong message and helping to decrease fatal doses.
- Cesar Avila warned traffickers are mixing fentanyl and carfentanil into many drugs, and Kim Edinger said, `He took what he thought was a blue oxy. It's called a blue 30 I believe. He thought it would help him with his anxiety, help him to relax a little bit. It ended up being carfentanil and killed him.
