DCI Arrested Suspect in Brutal Murder of Molo Student Joy Wangui

Detectives said the victim’s boyfriend was traced to a hideout after a manhunt and will face murder charges as investigators probe a possible relationship dispute.

  • On Tuesday, police arrested 23-year-old Walter Kipkoech in Lagwenda, Kuresoi North, for the murder of 18-year-old Joy Wangui, a Form Four student at Molo Secondary School, following a sustained manhunt.
  • Detectives are pursuing a relationship dispute as the primary motive, alleging Kipkoech killed Wangui after accusing her of cheating. He reportedly acted in anger after she resisted his moves, police said.
  • Investigators recovered an axe, a panga, and two knives at the scene in Kiambaa, Moto Location. They also found a message scrawled in blood on the wall reading, "I love you Joy but never cheat, am sorry."
  • Currently detained at Molo Police Station, Kipkoech faces murder charges while undergoing processing. Police say he was arrested wearing a blood-stained white T-shirt bearing the deceased's name at the hem.
  • The DCI expressed condolences to Wangui's family, noting the agency remains committed to investigating domestic disputes amid growing concerns over violence against women and girls. Police are pursuing leads in similar cases.
