Darren Aronofsky to Receive Honorary Leopard Award at Locarno Film Festival
The festival will also screen The Fountain and Mother! and host a public conversation with the filmmaker.
- The Locarno Film Festival will celebrate American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky with its Honorary Leopard, the Pardo d'Onore, at its 79th edition this summer. Organizers announced Tuesday that Aronofsky will receive the award on Friday, Aug. 14, at the 8,000-seat Piazza Grande.
- Artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro praised Aronofsky as a "visionary," noting the term "Aronofskian" now characterizes his deeply personal style. Locarno recognized his singularity as an artistic force probing the outer limits of faith and obsession.
- Aronofsky has defined contemporary cinema with films like The Wrestler , Black Swan , and The Whale , for which Brendan Fraser won Best Actor at the Academy Awards. He will present The Fountain and Mother! during the festival.
- Beyond the ceremony, Aronofsky will participate in an onstage public conversation. His recent work includes the feature film Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler and the animated series On This Day: 1776, which uses artificial intelligence to recreate moments from America's founding year.
- The 79th edition runs from August 5–15, continuing a tradition of honoring cinema legends. Previous recipients of the Pardo d'Onore include Bernardo Bertolucci, Ken Loach, Werner Herzog, Jane Campion, and last year's honoree, Alexander Payne.
