Medvedev disqualified from China Open for hitting spectator with a ball during match vs. Djokovic
The world No. 5 was disqualified after a shot struck a front-row spectator, ending his semifinal against Novak Djokovic.
On Monday, Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic after hitting a ball into the stands that struck a spectator in the front row.
Djokovic was serving for the match at 7-5, 5-3 when Medvedev hit the ball into the stands in apparent frustration, abruptly ending the contest.
The spectator, sitting in the front row, clutched his left eye in pain as he left the gallery assisted by stadium staff.
This incident is reminiscent of the 2020 U.S. Open, when Djokovic was disqualified for accidentally hitting a line judge in the throat with a ball.
Djokovic extended his perfect China Open record to 33-0, advancing to Tuesday's final against ninth-ranked Alex de Minaur after Hubert Hurkacz retired mid-match.
Since his semi-final opponent Daniil Medvedev was disqualified, tennis star Novak Djokovic is once again in the final at his favorite tournament in Beijing.
