Dan Osborn Apologizes for Disparaging Remarks During Red Cloud Town Hall Meeting
Osborn read an email from his campaign after remarks that drew criticism from town hall attendees.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, nonpartisan U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn held a town hall in Red Cloud, Neb., opening with an apology for leaked remarks about residents of the community.
Leaked audio reported by the Omaha World-Herald featured Osborn describing a hypothetical resident as a 'Trump supporter' whose 'life probably sucks.' The Ricketts campaign amplified the recording to criticize Osborn's view of rural Nebraskans.
Last week, a letter from 45 people, including 20 Republican state lawmakers and 25 county officials, demanded a response from Osborn. Attendee Kristen Brooks asked why he would 'dog on Red Cloud' during the Q&A.
Mixed reactions emerged; while some attendees remained unimpressed, 65-year-old resident Kathy Stoner and her husband, Max, expressed forgiveness. Max noted that other people likely talk similarly when not being recorded.
Discover Red Cloud executive director Jarrod McCartney highlighted the town's resilience, pointing to roughly $25 million invested over two decades and the community's connection to famous 20th-century writer Willa Cather.
