Dahlin, Makar, Werenski Named Finalists for Norris Trophy as NHL's Top Defenceman
Werenski, Makar and Dahlin reached the final three after standout seasons, with Werenski finishing second in NHL average ice time.
On Thursday, the NHL announced the three finalists for the James Norris Memorial Trophy: Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, Columbus Blue Jackets star Zach Werenski, and Buffalo Sabres standout Rasmus Dahlin.
The Norris Trophy, honoring former Detroit Red Wings owner James Norris, features reigning winner Makar, who has captured the award twice and seeks to become the first repeat winner since Nicklas Lidstrom won three consecutive times.
Werenski, the Blue Jackets' leading scorer for the second straight year, finished with 22 goals and 59 assists in 75 games, making him one of the few American-born defensemen in NHL history to reach 80 points in consecutive seasons.
Dahlin helped lead the Sabres to their first postseason berth since the 2010-11 season, ending the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports.
The NHL will announce the award winner later this offseason; a third victory would make Makar the 10th player in NHL history to win the Norris Trophy at least three times.
