US Returns over 650 Antiquities Valued at Nearly USD 14 Million to India
Officials said the return followed years of investigations into trafficking networks tied to Subhash Kapoor and Nancy Wiener.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the return of 657 stolen antiquities to India, valued at nearly $14 million, following investigations by the Antiquities Trafficking Unit and Homeland Security Investigations.
Investigations into international smuggling networks traced the looted items to operations linked to convicted trafficker Nancy Wiener and disgraced art dealer Subhash Kapoor, who illegally sold artifacts taken from India.
Notable recovered pieces include a red sandstone statue of Buddha valued at $7.5 million, smuggled into New York, and a rare bronze Avalokiteshvara from Chhattisgarh worth around $2 million.
Indian officials including Rajlakshmi Kadam accepted the artifacts during an official handover in New Delhi, where Binaya Pradhan thanked United States agencies for their continued vigilance in recovery efforts.
The Antiquities Trafficking Unit has recovered more than 6,200 artifacts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to date, with officials confirming this return is part of a larger ongoing mission.
