Cyclists tracking birds from Alaska to Patagonia reach Williams Lake

The cyclists are using GPS-tracked whimbrels and an interactive map to teach students and the public about migration and conservation.

  • Endurance athlete Leanna Carriera and conservation scientist Timm Dobert arrived in Williams Lake on August 29, completing a leg of their 30,000-kilometre 'Wings of Survival' cycling journey from Alaska to Patagonia.
  • The pair launched their expedition on Aug. 1 from Prudhoe Bay to document the migration of Hudsonian whimbrels, creating a storytelling endeavour aimed at reconnecting people with nature.
  • Dobert cited the challenge to 'manage human interactions' within five square metres of shelter space, while Carriera noted difficulty being away from her nine-year-old daughter.
  • On Saturday, Aug. 30, the duo presented at the Scout Island Nature Centre, sharing their mission to highlight the journeys and struggles of migratory shorebirds.
  • Partnering with Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants, the team provides virtual classrooms for children while aiming to reach Patagonia by mid-March 2027.
