Covert ‘Call Centre’ Busted in Srinagar Cyber Fraud Crackdown; 7 Held

Seven suspects arrested in Srinagar after CIK uncovered a covert call centre using VoIP tech and cryptocurrency to launder crores, targeting victims worldwide, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Counter Intelligence Kashmir carried out late-night raids in Srinagar, arresting seven suspects and seizing digital and communication equipment.
  • Prompted by multiple technical inputs, CIK-CID formed specialised teams that conducted surveillance and identified the Industrial Area, Rangreth as a key hub before launching coordinated raids.
  • Using unregistered VoIP systems, the suspects generated international virtual numbers and masked locations with server routing and spoofing, while fake YahooMail pages and Google advertisements displayed toll-free numbers operated by suspects.
  • Seized evidence included 13 mobile phones, nine laptops, VoIP systems, SIM cards, networking devices and digital storage media, and officials said stolen funds were routed into mule accounts and USDT wallets with a case registered.
  • Given its international targets, the case highlights cross-border investigative challenges as police said the well-organised syndicate had linkages beyond Jammu & Kashmir and targeted the USA, UK and Canada.
