Trainee GEOAmey prison custody officer 'angry' after pronoun disagreement, tribunal told
David Toshack was dismissed for refusing to follow GEOAmey's pronoun policy citing safety risks, including assaults linked to incorrect pronoun use, the tribunal heard.
- David Toshack, trainee prison custody officer, was dismissed with immediate effect in his final training week and has taken security firm GEOAmey to an employment tribunal.
- At a GEOAmey training session on January 7 last year, Mr Toshack said he would only use sex-based pronouns and was asked to leave the room, but he denies being "hostile" to colleagues.
- Instructors told the tribunal that paperwork used 'he' and a transgender prisoner then assaulted the officer, and discussing GEOAmey's pronoun and paperwork policy, Mr Hutton said Mr Toshack failed probation for safety risks.
- Ms Ross told the tribunal that transgender prisoner Tiffany Scott, previously Andrew Burns, required 24-hour supervision while in hospital and died in March 2024.
- On Monday the tribunal heard from Christopher Hutton, and the hearing continues in Edinburgh before employment judge Amanda Jones.
