New First Nations Wellness Centre in Fort St. James Draws on Traditional Knowledge to Close Health-Care Gaps
The centre will serve more than 1,250 patients with primary care, maternal health and traditional wellness services.
- The Dadzi Wellness Centre opened near Fort St. James at 160 Stuart Dr., providing integrated health services for the Nakazdli, Tlazten, and Binche communities.
- Minister of Health Josie Osborne said the centre combines Western clinical practices with First Nations knowledge, a community-led initiative designed to remove historical obstacles for the Dakelh people.
- At full capacity, the centre will employ 15.65 full-time-equivalent health-care providers to service more than 1,250 patients, operating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
- Operations director Donald Prince noted the model relies on nine protocols, including compassion and balance, with staff ranging from physicians and nurses to Elders and traditional healers.
- As one of three First Nations Primary Care Centres supported by the First Nations Health Authority and Ministry of Health, the centre strengthens regional infrastructure and ensures transparency through the Bahlats government.
