Cubans and Afghans deported from US arrive in Guyana
The six nationals of Cuba and Afghanistan will wait in Guyana while immigration authorities determine whether they can stay or be sent elsewhere.
- On Friday, Guyana received six deportees from the United States under the Trump administration's third-country deportation system, marking the first arrivals under the temporary arrangement. The group includes nationals from Cuba and Afghanistan.
- Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud stated his administration reached the agreement after months of negotiations. The arrangement runs for one year and does not constitute permanent resettlement.
- Persaud confirmed the six individuals were vetted and found to have no criminal backgrounds. The International Organization for Migration manages the program, with Guyana bearing no housing or support costs.
- Relocated individuals will await the outcome of their immigration status determination while in Guyana. They may ultimately return to their country of origin or be relocated elsewhere.
- Guyana, a founding member of the 15-nation Caribbean Community, joins other regional states receiving deportees. Participants include Belize, Kitts and Nevis, and Lucia, which recently accepted its first group.
