Cuba says four killed after speedboat from Florida entered Cuban waters and opened fire

Cuban border guards engaged a speedboat registered in Florida near Cayo Falcones on Wednesday morning, killing four and injuring six after it entered Cuban waters by the El Pino channel.
When approached for identification, Border Guard Troops of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior say occupants of the Florida-registered speedboat "opened fire" and Cuban forces returned fire after detecting the boat on the morning of February 25, 2026.
A Cuban surface unit carrying five service members reported approaching the speedboat for identification, the commander of the Cuban patrol boat was wounded, and injured individuals were evacuated and treated.
Cuban authorities say investigations are ongoing, and U.S. agencies, including the State Department, Pentagon, and U.S. Coast Guard, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Florida Representative Carlos Gimenez demanded an urgent investigation.
Amid heightened tensions and a fuel crisis, the incident occurred as Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, attended a Caribbean summit and echoes the Brothers to the Rescue incident.
