Emergency Crews Spend an Hour Digging Out Man Trapped at Sandwich Beach
More than two dozen responders dug for nearly an hour to free the 18-year-old, who was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.
On Tuesday, emergency crews rescued an 18-year-old identified as Zach who became trapped in sand at Scusset Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, after a hole collapsed around him.
Dotty Coleman, who called 911, reported that Zach tried to exit the hole when it caved in and buried him up to his mid-chest, leaving him sinking deeper.
About 25 responders from Bourne Fire and Sandwich Fire worked for 30 minutes to shore up the hole, using specialized equipment to extract the teen after he spent about 45 minutes trapped.
Paramedics provided advanced life support before Boston MedFlight transported Zach to Rhode Island Hospital, where officials confirmed he is in stable condition and expected to be okay.
Authorities note that hole digging at beaches poses significant dangers, citing a 2024 protective tube rescue and a 2015 Martha's Vineyard cave-in that required extensive emergency response.
