Alberta country music artist Corb Lund says anti-coal petition drive a success
The campaign says it gathered enough support to trigger a review, with almost 178,000 signatures required under Alberta petition rules.
Singer Corb Lund announced his "Water Not Coal" campaign collected enough signatures to compel the Alberta government to address coal mining on the Rockies' Eastern Slopes.
Premier Danielle Smith's government retroactively cancelled Lund's initial petition via Bill 14 in December 2025, forcing him to restart the initiative after receiving official approval in January 2026.
Elections Alberta requires at least 177,732 verified signatures for a citizen initiative, representing 10 per cent of total votes cast in the last provincial election.
On Wednesday, Lund will submit the signatures to Elections Alberta for verification; a successful petition forces the government to consider banning coal mining or holding a referendum.
Coal mining in the foothills threatens the Eastern Slopes and headwaters feeding major rivers, the campaign argues, including the Athabasca, Oldman, South Saskatchewan, North Saskatchewan, Peace, and Red Deer.
