Court challenge may force Online Streaming Act revisit: CRTC chairperson
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission may see the Online Streaming Act reviewed if courts rule against mandatory 5% Canadian revenue payments.
- Yesterday, Vicky Eatrides, CRTC chairperson, said Parliament may have to revisit the Online Streaming Act if a court challenge by streamers succeeds, adding `It depends on the decision.`
- Streaming companies are challenging the order that forces them to pay five per cent of their annual Canadian revenues to fund Canadian content, including local TV news, while the CRTC holds multiple proceedings.
- CRTC vice-president Scott Shortliffe said streamers have made contributions held in trust, some distributed by their choice, and the money is managed by an independent administering body, not the CRTC.
- The court has paused payments estimated at $1.25 million annually per streaming company until it releases its decision.
- Scott Shortliffe said the CRTC will continue its work, telling the parliamentary committee, `We will see what the courts decide. And in the meantime, we will continue on administering the act.
