Amsterdam is the first major city to have a new team of aldermen. The nine aldermen were sworn in on Wednesday evening following a hearing in which they explained how they will fulfill their roles and answered questions from the council. This generally took place in a benevolent and sometimes lighthearted atmosphere.
Amsterdam opposition council members who hoped that the all-powerful bloc of Progressive Netherlands (PN) and D66 was interested in their vision for the city were disappointed on Wednesday. During the debate on the coalition agreement, they spoke into thin air.
Last week, PRO Amsterdam and D66 presented the new coalition agreement containing the plans for the coming four years, and also introduced the new aldermen. Today, the city council is debating those plans and there is a hearing in which the new aldermen are grilled by the council. It can all be followed live on AT5 from 12:30 PM.
