Women's Pro Hockey Is Coming to Hockeytown with PWHL Adding Expansion Franchise in Detroit
Ilitch Sports + Entertainment and city officials will make an exciting announcement as the league weighs adding 2 to 4 teams, The Hockey News reported.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Professional Women's Hockey League officially announced Detroit as its ninth franchise, marking the league's latest expansion into the United States.
Detroit's selection follows four successful "Takeover Tour" games at Little Caesars Arena, including a record 15,938 fan turnout in March, cementing the league's partnership with the Ilitch family.
Hosting the league's awards and draft in June, Detroit will play home games at the venue, with uniforms featuring black, silver, and white colors with a red accent.
Establishing a ninth team strengthens the PWHL's push for a major U.S. national broadcast partnership, supporting executive leadership's long-term strategy to add between two and four total clubs.
Ahead of the 2026-27 season, league officials are evaluating additional expansion markets, including Denver and Las Vegas, to further broaden the PWHL's North American footprint.
