Conservatives call on auditor general to investigate $250 million PrescribeIT program
The program drew $298 million in federal spending, but fewer than 5% of prescriptions used it, prompting questions about its failure.
On Tuesday, Conservative MPs called on the Auditor-General to investigate nearly $300 million in federal spending on PrescribeIT, a digital prescription program cancelled after few doctors adopted the service.
Launched in 2017 to 'axe the fax,' the project ended in February after fewer than 5 per cent of prescriptions flowed through the service, with Health Canada disclosing actual spending reached $298 million.
About $98 million of that went to Telus Health as the main technology vendor, while Canada Health Infoway, the non-profit running the project, provided few answers to MPs about budget expenditures.
Parliamentarians voted unanimously to summon Canada Health Infoway CEO Michael Green for further testimony, with the health committee scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss continuing the investigation.
Conservative MP Mazier, joined by Burton Bailey, Helena Konanz, and Matt Strauss, criticized the Liberals for keeping most Canadians unaware of the initiative, claiming lack of transparency was intentional.
Conservative MPs ask the Auditor General to investigate the federal government's management of a $250 million program that is expected to be discontinued next month.
