Vijay's Number Game: How Tamil Nadu Assembly Tally Stacks up for TVK After Congress' Support
Congress will back Vijay's TVK to form the Tamil Nadu government, but its support is conditional on excluding communal parties from the alliance.
On Wednesday, the Indian National Congress announced it will support actor-politician Joseph Vijay's Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the Tamil Nadu government after Vijay requested backing.
Making its electoral debut, the TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling 10 short of the 118-seat majority required to govern independently.
AICC in-charge Girish Chodankar stated the support is conditional: the TVK must keep "any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India" out of the alliance.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai slammed the Congress as a "backstabber" for breaking their alliance, claiming Congress made a "complete fool of themselves" with insufficient support.
The alliance extends beyond government formation to future elections including local bodies, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha, while the TVK explores alternatives with the AIADMK.
