Press Release - Global Witness is calling for businesses and governments to better consider the human cost of rare earth minerals, following the horrific mine disaster in the Democratic Republic of Congo recently.
Last week, a massive landslide buried hundreds of artisanal diggers in the immense Rubaya complex in North Kivu, RD-Congo, revealing the collapse of security standards in these artisanal mining areas. A provisional record shows 226 deaths.
The local authorities are calling for international assistance in the face of a lack of resources to continue the rescue efforts. The site of the disaster is controlled by the most dangerous irregular group in the Congo.
